FAQs: (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q: Why was the porta~PROMPTER developed?

A: The porta~PROMPTER was developed by a videographer for videographers. He was looking for a way to help video talent be more at ease in front of the camera. Looking at all the other prompters on the market, he found that they were either too expensive and complicated to set up and use, or that they appeared to be too fragile and breakable for videotaping interviews and testimonials in the field. What he found was that using the porta~PROMPTER cut his production time in half. It put the talent at ease in front of the camera, which improved their performance and made for better all-around video production. He also found that the porta~PROMPTER was rugged and held up to the rigours and demands of video work outside the studio setting. The porta~PROMPTER allows a videographer many of the advantages of a regular teleprompter at a much lower cost, and many who use it find it much simpler to setup and operate.

  Q: What’s so special about the porta~PROMPTER?

A: The beauty of the porta~PROMPTER is its simplicity. It uses no electricity, computers, or breakable components such as glass and mirrors. A script can be prepared on any word processor and printed out on any laser or inkjet printer. The porta~PROMPTER will accommodate regular letter or legal size paper (an entire 30-second TV script will fit on a legal size page). And, if a longer script is needed, the porta~PROMPTER also accepts continuous fanfold paper.

Q: How does the porta~PROMPTER work?

A: You mount your script on the drum of the porta~PROMPTER, using the script slots provided. A script can be mounted on the drum in about 5-10 seconds. If you are using continuous fanfold script paper, the top edge of the script is folded and inserted into one of the slots. As the script is read, the script drum is turned, continually rotating the script up under the lens of the camera. All the while, the talent is reading from the lines of the script on the underside of the lens, giving the on-camera appearance that the script is memorized and the talent is looking straight into the camera lens.

Q: What are the different applications for the porta~PROMPTER?

A: The primary application for the porta~PROMPTER is for it to be mounted on the tripod of the video camera directly under the camera lens. However, in a matter of seconds, the camera and porta~PROMPTER can be detached from the tripod and used in a handheld fashion to create a “bob-and-weave” reality TV effect like is seen today in many commercials, TV shows and videos. In addition, some videographers like the talent looking off camera when they speak instead of straight into the lens and at the viewing audience. This can be easily achieved by mounting the porta~PROMPTER on a separate tripod and positioning that tripod just to the right or left of the camera tripod, giving the on-camera appearance that the person is talking with another person just off camera.

The porta~PROMPTER is the perfect teleprompting solution for independent videographers, high school and college video production classes, hunting, fishing and outdoor video producers, cable and broadcast TV commercial producers, and churches that do broadcast production.
